The outriggers are floats (ama) that are attached to the main hull by a set of horizontal beams (iako). These are typically made from lighter, buoyant wood or other materials like bamboo. They are carefully crafted to ensure they provide stability without adding excessive weight or drag.

Outrigger canoes use sophisticated joinery and lashings to secure the iako to both the hull and the ama. Traditionally, natural fibers such as coconut husk cords (sennit) were used for lashing. Today, synthetic ropes and even bolts can be used for stronger and more durable connections.
